About Lacey Hermiston
BIOGRAPHY
Lacey graduated from the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana, in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in art and minors in art history and art criticism. She also earned a bachelor's degree in K-12 art education from the University of Montana Western in Dillon, Montana, in 2016. Lacey grew up in the small town of Plains, Montana, and lived there for 18 years. She was highly influenced by the outdoors. Lacey and her family enjoyed many outdoor activities: Hiking, boating, hunting, and fishing on the Clark Fork River. Lacey's home in Plains is located on the Clark Fork River, and it has been a great place to view wildlife, which is a huge inspiration for her work. Over the years these animals and activities became vivid models for her artistic ideas and creations. While living in Missoula and Dillon she has been inspired by the new landscapes she has enjoyed through recreation and by the diverse art in the community. Lacey plans to stay in Montana and to continue creating art inspired by the "Big Sky" state.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I portray Montana and its wildlife in an unconventional setting that still connects the animal or object to the wild in a way that is comical and light-hearted. A good way to describe my paintings is semi-realism. I paint my subjects true to form, but also take creative license with color. My paintings are created with acrylic on birch wood panels. I believe that having that element of wood visible helps direct my art to a natural setting. Using an organic material such as birch wood allows the grain of the wood to show often in unexpected ways on each piece I create. The woodgrain often brings in a nice element of texture and detail to the painting.
I was born and raised in Montana and it inspires me from what I experienced while growing up and what I am still experiencing. I often try and add a humorous spin to an image that is often seen either by changing the color or adding a non-traditional object. The animals I paint are ones that I can relate to seeing daily while growing up, from elk and deer mounts on the walls of my family's home to the deer outside in our field. I believe that art doesn't always have to connect to an issue or have a powerful statement. For me, my art is something that brings me happiness, represents memories, and visually pleases me. It is my hope that others will also enjoy viewing my art. I welcome viewers to enjoy Montana through my eyes. It is my hope that my paintings may also inspire others to step outside and enjoy all the nature has to offer no matter what area of the world they live in.
". . . I'm in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection. But with Montana it is love. And it's difficult to analyze love when you're in it. . . "
